2025 Music & Songwriting Workshop:
What is the Music & Songwriting Workshop?
Over the course of one week, the workshop participants (ages 8 - 12yrs old) will create a live music production made up of their original songs culminating in one final public performance. They will build their ideas in song journals, in the moment collaboration and create a live music concert that is always filled with spectacularly heartfelt performances of their original songs that connect with audiences of all ages.
The youth participants will work with the musical director and visiting teaching artists to explore songwriting, music performance, music production, co-writing, sound design, and how to build a song for musical theater. Each student will have the opportunity to create a solo or a group piece - their focus can consist of songwriting, musical theater, instrumental performance, vocal performance, theatrical performance, or backstage/production management.

What is Make-A-Play?
Over the course of two weeks, youth workshop participants (ages 6 - 12yrs old) program will create a a play from start to finish and produce one final Performance on the stage of Phoenicia Playhouse. This type of work is a mixture of devised and applied theater where the student actors learn interactive storytelling and physical literacy. It is an extraordinary effort by the Participants involved, and works on the immensely important life skills of collaboration, problem solving, compromise and learning all the aspects of how to create a multimedia production from start to finish. This type of program is designed to give a voice to what the students are currently learning in school and how they feel and see the world around them. We build our play off of their original thoughts, characters and dialogue which then gets turned into a script and performed for their community. This type of story building leads us down many paths of possible outcomes, but together the student actors use practical and creative ways to grow their story and production together. This youth community program helps to promote social emotional learning, creative problem solving, and group collaboration.
