Meet the local organizations, businesses, and community members who support the Phoenicia Playhouse

2025 SEASON SPONSORS

We are thrilled to announce today a grant award totaling $86,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) to support major capital improvements to our historic 138-year-old theater building. This grant is part of a capital project funding announcement by NYSCA, which totals over $86 million to 134 capital projects across New York State.

This funding will enable a full replacement of the Playhouse’s heating and cooling system, allowing us to move away from oil and towards a renewable future. We will incorporate new equipment while retaining portions of our existing ductwork. Additionally, five new mini-split units will extend climate control to previously unconditioned areas, significantly enhancing comfort for both audiences and performers. The grant will also support the installation of a backup generator and the replacement of several exterior doors, improving both safety and energy efficiency.

Thank you to our board of Directors, our Playhouse Manager and to our community for their support in helping us get this grant! A special thanks to those who wrote letters of support for this capital project: Brooke Harrison, Shandaken Town Supervisor - Peter DiSclafani, Cornell Cooperative Extension Ulster County, and Town of Shandaken's Conservation Advisory Committee.

We are deeply grateful for this investment in the future of our historic theater.

A note from our board president:

“We are grateful to NYSCA for another wonderful vote of confidence in the future of the Playhouse and our commitment to serving the community with an ambitious schedule of theater, music, films and youth-focused programs. Last year NYSCA awarded $25,000 to the Playhouse for improvements to the theater’s box office and entrance areas. Work on the latest capital projects will likely begin at the end of the 2025 season. This is all part of a larger planned effort to develop and maintain the Playhouse as an important arts and culture center in the region."

“Our arts and culture sector is a powerhouse, inspiring the world with innovation and creativity,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “By investing in our museums, our theaters and our arts centers, we enrich our communities, strengthen local economies and improve tourism all over the State.”

NYSCA Executive Director Erika Mallin said, “These transformative projects improve communities, drive tourism and foster innovation in the field. Thanks to the Governor and the Legislature’s dedication to arts and culture, we are building a thriving future for our world-renowned creative sector. Congratulations to the Phoenicia Playhouse, NYSCA is a proud supporter of your contributions to New York’s arts and culture.”

About the Phoenicia Playhouse: The Phoenicia Playhouse is a performing arts organization that strengthens, invigorates and promotes the Catskills community. Located at 10 Church Street in the heart of Phoenicia, the theater was constructed in 1887 by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Over the years it has housed the original charitable and fraternal organization, an auction house, and a movie house. It is now one of the Catskill region’s longest-lived arts organizations. The Playhouse building has been an important resource for its community for 138 years. The organization’s goal is to keep it thriving for artists and patrons of future generations.

About the New York State Council on the Arts: The mission of the New York State Council on the Arts is to foster and advance the full breadth of New York State’s arts, culture, and creativity for all. To support the ongoing recovery of the arts across New York State, the Council on the Arts will award over $161 million in FY 2026, serving hundreds of arts organizations and artists across all 10 state regions. The Council on the Arts further advances New York's creative culture by convening leaders in the field and providing organizational and professional development opportunities and informational resources. Created by Governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1960 and continued with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, the Council is an agency that is part of the Executive Branch.
