Synopsis: When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.

ALISON – 43 years old, a cartoonist.
MEDIUM ALISON** – 19 years old, a college freshman.
SMALL ALISON* – around 9 years old
BRUCE BECHDEL** – Alison's father
HELEN BECHDEL – Alison's mother
CHRISTIAN BECHDEL – Alison's brother, around 10 years old
JOHN BECHDEL – Alison's brother, around 6 years old
ROY** – a young man Bruce hires to do yard work.
MARK – a high school junior
JOAN – a college student.
PETE – a mourner
BOBBY JEREMY and THE SUSAN DEYS – imaginary television characters
Multi-Role Casting:
- The roles of Roy, Mark, Pete and Bobby Jeremy are played by the same actor.
- The Susan Deys are played by the actors playing Medium Alison & Joan
*Platonic Family Intimacy / Staged Lift:
- Bruce & Small Alison – Bruce picks up his daughter Small Alison so she can fly like an airplane.
**Sexual / Romantic Intimacy w/ possible Hyperexposure (No Nudity):
- Medium Alison & Joan – Kissing and brief simulated or implied sexual activity. Actors may wear pajamas or undergarments while lying in bed together.
- Bruce & Roy – Roy unbuttons his shirt for Bruce, exposing his partial / full chest or a tanktop. Touch is entirely optional.
All Scripted Intimacy can be adjusted according to actors’ comfort level. An Intimacy Director is available upon request.
What To Prepare:
Please bring a Photo / Headshot and Resume if you have them.
Vocal - Please have a prepared song and bring sheet music.
Acting - If you would like to do a monologue that’s great - 1 minute please
